How We Test & Choose Products

Every recommendation on GearCompared is backed by real research and testing. Here's exactly how we do it.

1. We Research

Before testing anything, we spend hours reading spec sheets, customer reviews, and expert forums. We identify the products real people are buying — not just the ones with the biggest marketing budgets.

We look at at least 20-30 products per category and narrow the field to the top 5-8 that deserve a closer look.

2. We Test (or Buy and Use)

We purchase products at retail price — we don't accept free samples from manufacturers. This keeps our reviews independent. For each product, we use it for at least two weeks of normal daily use before forming an opinion.

For standing desks: we assemble them, adjust them, work on them for full workdays, and test stability at standing height.

For kitchen appliances: we run them through their paces with real cooking tasks — blending smoothies, air-frying frozen foods, brewing coffee, baking with stand mixers.

3. We Compare (Fairly)

Every product is scored on the same criteria for its category. We look at:

  • Performance — does it do what it promises?
  • Build quality — will it last?
  • Value — is it worth the price?
  • Ease of use — setup, daily operation, cleaning
  • Customer satisfaction — verified Amazon ratings and review trends

4. We Update

Prices change. New models launch. Ratings shift. We re-check our picks regularly and update reviews when things change. Every review includes a "last updated" date so you know you're reading current information.

Our Pledge

  • We buy the products we review at retail price
  • We never accept payment for placement or reviews
  • If a product is bad, we say so
  • Commissions never influence our rankings
  • We disclose how we make money clearly and prominently
